Building Twitter Popularity By Following Others

Social media can sometimes seem like a popularity contest with the actual number of Facebook friends or Twitter followers you have becoming almost more important than whether or not you actually communicate or engage with those people. While most of us can quickly and easily run through school friends, friends of friends, old clients or old colleagues on our Facebook pages to increase the count, increasing Twitter followers for a business page can be quite a difficult task. One of the best ways to approach the feat of building a worthwhile Twitter presence with a relevant audience of followers, is actually to begin at the other side of the equation and find Twitterers worth following yourself.

Having a page that follows influential brands or personalities in your own industry goes a long way towards showing that your own page actually knows what it’s talking about. Twitter can very much be about who you know, and if your Twitter page is seen to follow thought leaders and well-known figureheads of your specialist area, there is a suggestion that your own page – and therefore you as a company – are on top of latest trends and opinion.

Here’s how:

1. Twitter Lists

Introduced fairly recently, Twitter lists are designed to be easy to develop, search and create. You can create your own list to showcase the users you follow but, can also tap into the lists of others. This makes it easy to find authoritative and interesting users to follow. Many Twitter users will follow those who follow them so not only will a list provide you with an easy route to developing your own following list, it may also help your own followers count.

Not all users create list or are included on lists, but finding a selection of relevant industry pages to view should open up at least a handful of lists to browse through. You can also follow a list in the same way you would another user, to remind you to check back and browse new members every so often. Simply click on follow in the same way you would to following any other user.

2. Listorious

The Listorious site is probably the best known of Twitter lists and can help to make step one above even easier to implement.  The site is very easy to use and makes finding users in your niche to follow the work of seconds. This method of searching for new Twitter users to follow means that users with interesting viewpoints you may not have previously been aware of are within reach.

3. Twibes

Twibes is similar to Listorious. The service is designed to allow you to search for users or lists with common interests. Use this site to seek out even more Twitter pages about your area of specialty to keep tabs on.

4. Repeat the Formula

Having found lots of users to follow and study, take the time to really study what it is that makes their tweets interesting enough to see them included in lists. Repeating the same formula for success should see your own page gaining popularity as you tap into what readers respond too. Being included in lists is a sure fire way of increasing the reach of your Twitter page.

  1. Twitter lists can also be a great way to be found. I recently started a Twitter account to go along with a political site. I then created a Twitter list of the leaders within that particular idealogical group. People are now finding my Twitter account because more and more people are following that list. Within time, that list will probably rank well within Google for it's name, and I will get more followers that way as well.

  2. Hello Rebecca Appleton, Thanks for sharing such an interesting post. I would like to share few of the points are - 1. Bring your twitter account into the physical world. 2. Take pictures as pictures are heavily retweeted. 3. Start a contest. 4. Follow the top twitter users and watch what they tweet.
