[...] Millions of businesses have jumped on the social media express train over the last 12 months, but many of them do not know why they have a Facebook account or why it is so important that they have a presence on Twitter. Even those companies that have dedicated personnel in-house to work on their social media presence often struggle to justify the investment -– all they know for sure is that they ought to be participating in social media, often as part of their SEO efforts. http://www.searchmarketingstandard.com/develop-social-media-strategy-2010 [...]

I think there's pretty much no brand that isn't sold on the need for social media at this point. Looking at Vitrue's 100 for 2009, it's pretty clear that even the largest of brands -- CNN, Nintendo, Ford, Victoria's Secret, to name a few -- are on board. And everyone down to my massage therapist and favorite pubs are on Twitter and Facebook.

I really think we're moving on to the "how" in 2010 -- how to implement, how to measure, how not to get overwhelmed by being in 10 places you don't need to be.

Hi Rebecca,

Yes, it's point 4 that most everyone overlooks.

If you don't have some metrics in place, then it's hard/impossible to gauge how successful you really are.

I'd also add that you need to dedicate someone (you!) as the owner of this effort in the company, otherwise it falls by the wayside when the novelty wears off.

Regards,

Ivan
