Talking Search Marketing Standard with Boris Mordkovich
June 14th, 2007
Search Marketing Standard (SMS) is a print publication that first appeared in the spring of 2006. I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about it, not because I knew anything about it, I just didn’t want to get my hopes up too high. But I tell you what, my skepticism went away with issue number one. I’m a fan and am always happy to see a new one arrive. The magazine has well respected names in the industry doing the writing, the content is fresh and informative, it’s laid out well, pleasing to the eye, and easy to read.

A Look at Search Marketing Standard Magazine
June 8th, 2007
A few weeks later I found myself thumbing through my shiny new Search Marketing Standard (SMS). It had a nice layout that was engaging, no fly by night stuff here. My bff Todd said that I would know the names and that proved to be true. Jaimie Sirovich, Kristi Serrano and Kim Krause Berg immediately stood out as people I knew. SMS made a good first impression on me.
My overall impression was very positive and I’ll be recommending the magazine to my friends. I guess my whoredom totally paid off, I scored a great magazine.

Search Marketing Standard Focuses on SEM Training and Welcomes Usability Topics
May 20th, 2007
While the Summer issue seemed on the thin side, it continues to deliver thoughtful articles that are intended to be referred to at any time. One of my favorites was written by Jaime Sirovich, where he describes in easy to understand terms exactly why search engines struggle with FLASH, images and AJAX technology. He provides example code workarounds to help search engines read the text on a page even with typical obstructions.
Eric Ward describes the logic and lack of logic behind linkbait. The Industry Analysis section included two usability oriented articles; one written by me called “Persuasive Web Design” and another written by Barry Welford titled, “Mobile Marketing and Usability”. This was the first time I made it into a print publication of this caliber. It was both exciting and an honor to be asked. Other Industry Analysis pieces were contributed by Chris Boggs, of SEMPO and Avenue A Razorfish, and Tom Dahm.

Winter Issue of Search Marketing Standard Features Well-Known SEM’s
November 29th, 2006
This issue is juicy. The articles aren’t basic search engine marketing or basic search engine material. The writers were a personal thrill, not experienced in any other publication I receive. I flipped through it and drove my husband, Eric, crazy, with remarks like, “Oh! There’s Rand!” and “I know that guy,” and “I thought he was younger!” (I won’t tell you which author I said that about.)
This magazine continues to be a real joy to read. The advertisements have a Web 2.0 look to them, with bright colors and large fonts. It’s funny to scan the ads and say to myself, “Oh, there’s Bob Mutch! I know him!” or “Hey, Andy Beal has an ad in there. Cool!”

A magazine for search engine marketing
October 2, 2006
In our review of the first issue of the only paper based search engine marketing periodical in the world, we concluded that it was well worth the price. And indeed, the second issue confirms that the magazine is a must read for anyone remotely connected to search engine marketing.
The Search Engine Marketing Standard is already an important source of search engine marketing information and analysis and it keeps getting better.

Search Marketing Standard (Review)
August 22, 2006
I received a review copy of Search Marketing Standard (the Fall issue). The magazine’s quite nice. It focuses on search engine optimization techniques, expert interviews, landing page optimization (e.g. A/B split tests), URL rewriting with programming examples and such. Articles are easy to read, without artificial “verboseness” to fill the pages. The overall philosophy of the magazine is clearly white-hat, a good thing to see.
As much of this issue reads like a general overview and guide, I wonder if the makers will be able to find new content for each issue. It might be nice to see more case studies (and possibly, more numbers – I was curious to see how much money those guys make with their different optimized websites). Or a couple of web promotion techniques that don’t rely on search. But all in all, the mag is off to a good start. I guess like a good website they’ll work with the reader feedback they get to improve future issues, so let’s see how they evolve.

Search Marketing Standard Contains More Meat This Time
August 21, 2006
Alerted by Andrey Milyan, Editor-in-Chief of Search Marketing Standard magazine, that it should be in my mailbox by now, I sent my son off to check. He came back with the second issue of this new quarterly publication. Glancing through, I see they’ve followed up on the feedback that readers wanted more content.
I still enjoy the colors, the glossy pages and even the ads are nicely displayed. The articles remain targeted to newer practioners in the search engine marketing industry. None really get into the user centered design connection, but their focus may not intend to reach past traditional SEO/M boundaries.

The Search Marketing Standard
June 6, 2006
In the Search Engine Marketing Standard’s own words, the magazine is “devoted completely to the world of search marketing. It covers pay per click advertising, search engine optimization, web analytics, click fraud, local and contextual search, and other search-related topics.”
Indeed it does. Moreover, it tries to bridge the gap between the search engine marketing professional and the marketing generalist, including both general basic introductions to various topics, as well as more in depth, specialized analysis.

First Issue of the Search Marketing Standard Released
May 22, 2006
As Kim reported here back in January 2006, the magazine Search Marketing Standard has finally been sent out. I received my copy over the weekend and just reviewed the topics now.
They have about 19 advertisers, including WebmasterWorld’s PubCon. They sent out, reportedly, over 15,000 of them. They put a free plug for this blog in the magazine, which is appreciated. The magazine seemed a bit thin, but it is the first edition.

The Glossy New Search Marketing Standard
May 17, 2006
After reading on the Internet, for ten years, everything I ever wanted to know about search engines and how to market to them, I was surprised to discover how much cooler it is to get the new Search Marketing Standard magazine in the mail.
It’s glossy. Colorful. With readable fonts that don’t need to be resized. The full-page ads are classy and bold. Articles start off on the left page and continue in sequence with little interruption. Featured sections are well labeled. It looks professional. It graces my coffee table.

Search Marketing Magazine Coming Soon
April 6 , 2006
Want to read the magazine? It debuts in a few weeks, and if you’re US based, you can get the first year free through April 30. And that’s free — no credit card is apparently required. Those of us outside the US have to cough up the $20 bucks.
But it’s nice to see this one now. It’s another sign of search growing up to the point that those who simply prefer material printed on dead trees can tune into the industry. And I’m a firm dead tree reader myself.
