Continuing on the weekly infographic column for Search Marketing Standard, we turn our attention this week to different types of infographics that are effective. Contrary to popular belief, you can’t just turn a graphic designer loose and have a comprehensive infographic that will be bringing you traffic, links, love and kisses throughout the web 10 minutes later
There’s much more to it than that. And we’ll be going through some of the concepts that work, and work well. Today’s focus: what kinds of infographics do well on the web?
Unfortunately, that’s not that easy a question to answer. We don’t own and control the web and website visitors can be very fickle. Something we can approach is what kind of styles we believe will predictively perform.
Today’s style: the survey.
Most of us have participated in a survey at one point or another – either answering questions or building a survey to understand what our audience wants. Ever try reading survey results? It sucks. And certainly don’t expect your C-level management to sit there bored to tears. Not with all of life’s other distractions.
Surveys are a great data input to fuel today’s infographics. Here’s a great example of a survey conducted by Android app developer community Startapp.com where they polled their community to get a better understanding of what Android developers like:

Obviously visually interesting, this infographic does a great job in pointing out key insights from the survey. It gives the reader a sense at a glance a glimpse inside the mind of an Android developer – even if the reader is outside of that tribe.
